Harvard Square

By Elizabeth S. | Last Updated: October 14, 2003

I’ve always loved going into Harvard Square with my high school friends. I remember the first time my mom let me go with them; I was in ninth grade and I felt independent and grown up. We got off the T and walked up the stairs into the city. I remember feeling a bit scared and intimidated. There were so many different types of people, each with something different on their minds. It was busy: cars rushing by, sirens, horns, people playing music on the sidewalks. It was different from the quiet suburb I was used to but I liked it.

I got used to going into Boston and it got less intimidating each time I went. Last week, I took the T from my new location of Boston College with some new friends I’ve made here. Getting off the T in Harvard Square was different this time. In a way, I felt as if my mind was playing games with me: I was in the same place I had gone so many times before but, instead of being with the people I’ve known my whole life, I was with people I had just met a few weeks ago, people I didn’t know as well. After the initial shock of this different feeling, I took in a deep breath and smelled the city air and it became familiar again.

One of the friends I went with is also from around here and she knows the area a little better than I do. We wanted to show the other girls we were with a good time since we both loved going to Harvard Square. We took them shopping and through the beautiful Harvard Campus. We took some time to watch the different musicians on the streets and take in the things going on around us. For dinner, we went to Fire and Ice – one of my favorite restaurants.

After dinner, I got back on the T with my new friends, some new clothes, and a new experience in a familiar place.
